Crum Ends Championship Season at Southern National
Kenly, NC: Sunday marked the end of the 2008 season for Jake “the Snake” Crum driver of the #1 Chevrolet and 2008 UARA Stars Champion. After being postponed due to rain Thanksgiving weekend, the Thanksgiving Classic was held on December 7th at Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, NC. Despite solid practice and qualifying times, a race full of accidents caused the 17 year old driver to park his car early.
From the time the green flag waved to start the race fans were on the edge of their seats. Crum started on the inside of the 6th row in the 11th spot. With a good start Crum was able to jump up to 8th place within the first 15 laps. He continued working his way up the field and was fortunately just far enough ahead of most of the pack to avoid a 10 car pileup on lap 33. By the time the wreckage was all cleaned up the 32 car field was down to 23 cars.
Crum was caught on the outside during the restart and drifted back to 10th place where he rode for 50 laps. By the time the mandatory caution came out at lap 100, Crum was up to ninth place and back starting on the inside.
Crum had another solid restart from the inside and was up to 8th place. On lap 136 he was involved in a 6 car pileup that damaged the front right side of the car. The crew brought him in and removed the front clip. He restarted 17th in the 21 car field. Despite some minor damage, Crum moved up the field until lap 181 when he was running in the top ten and decided to park the car.
“The car was not running right after the accident,” said Team Owner Billy Crum. “With the double file restarts and large number of accidents we did not want to risk anymore damage on the car. We knew we no longer had a winning car, so it was not worth the risk.”
Crum ends his championship season with 17 starts, 1 pole, 2 wins, 10 top five and 12 top ten finishes.
“I want to thank everyone on my crew for such an awesome season,” said Crum. “We could not have been so successful all season without all the hard work that everyone put in at the track and in the shop.”
